Ladies, I Need Your Help

November 12, 2008

Well, actually I don't need your help. I'm asking on behalf of a friend. Honest. Okay, fine, don't believe me, but help me out, anyway.

I have a friend who is single and female and is going on a somewhat blind date this Friday evening. She's going to an "upscale casual" restaurant with this guy, and doesn't know what to wear. Like me, she's a chemist, so all of her clothes are of the "if I spill acid on this, I can just throw it away" variety.

So, any suggestions? She reads this blog, so just drop any nuggets of wisdom in the comments section.

In other news, I almost got into a fist fight today at lunch with some douchebag in a DirectTV van. Consider this part of my community service.

Lots of cleavage. That's all I can say.

Will you beat up my cable TV guy? I'll pay you cash money.

You know, I gave her the same advice and she didn't seem amused.

Sure thing. Can I smash my door into the side of his van first and then he can call me a "stupid fuck"? That makes it a lot better.

I think we should have a clearer definition of "upscale".

Go with all black with some red accoutrements. If she has an interesting piece of jewelry, wear that too. If no interesting jewerly, stick with silver jewelry , noit gold. And don't wear flats.

Am I the first to answer the question seriously? Well, here goes . . .

My "go to" outfit when I'm not sure how dressy to be in the winter is a knee length skirt, sweater and boots. Guys LOOOVE boots so you can be sexy w/o showing all your wares.

If she has nice cleavage I recommend a V-neck sweater with an interesting necklace.

If she's got a great ass, tighter skirt. Big ole butt like me? A-line skirt.

If she's got a great waistline, belt the sweater.

Also, a long scarf is a nice way to dress up a more "casual" look. If my skirt and sweater are plain/solid color I wear a vibrant scarf, e.g. bold color with metallic threads run through.

If she doesn't have these items, they can be gotten at Kohl's fairly inexpensively.

Oh! Tights. Wear tights with the boots.

Basically? Draw the eye to your best feature, wear boots, and you can't go wrong.

Sorry for the dissertation, mjenks.

I'd love a post-date report!

I'm impressed by Zibbs' answer, although I don't know why because he does have a way with the ladies.

No advice. I'm a walking fashion disaster :)

I agree with Gwen on the black skirt. Classic is the way to go. Simple. Classy can go a long way. And it's hard to screw up. Nice heels, nylons or tights for sure. Make sure if it's cold that she's got a nice coat... nothing ruins an outfit like a grubby coat. And she might want to wear a shirt and a jacket or something that she can take off if it's too warm or wear if it's too cold. That's all I got.

Wait, Gwennie, did you just say that men "LOOOVE boots"??

I'm sure I speak on behalf of a lot of guys - if not most, that men don't give a crap about what shoes a woman is wearing.

Considering that most men are taller than women, and when you're out on a date with someone it's not often you're across the room from them, most of the time the shoes are never in view anyways.

No, men want to see boobs, butts, hips, and legs. If she spends more than 15 minutes picking out shoes then she's wasting her time.

And if it matters to the guy about shoes or the clothes she wears to a large degree, she probably wouldn't want him anyways! She's a chemist! Does she really want to hang around with a guy who gets upset if she wears a sweater when she should have wore a ... hmmm... something other than a sweater? (I have no clue here.)

If it's just about getting laid though, then a short black skirt would do. And maybe rub his junk during the meal to make sure.

Wrong.

While most of us don't have a shoe or foot fetish, I'm willing to bet that most of us do notice and appreciate nice shoes. Boots can be hot.

Hmmm, maybe I'm wrong about most guys not caring about shoes?? I might be completely out to lunch here.

I put a poll up on my blog, I'd like to hear what people think about this, specifically men.

Gotta agree w/Gwen.

Make sure the boots have "fuck-me" heels.

Just in case.

My advise: A peek of cleveage. Nothing more. Either a pair of sexy boots or heels. Tights... black ones. Interesting jewelry, though I am going against Zibbs and saying gold instead of silver. I would tell her to wear something she feels confident in, that is more attractive than anything else.

I think other than that, make sure she doesn't wear too much makeup. Just enough... Keep it on the natural side. Lipgloss should not be the sticky kind, in case there is kissing.

All great advice! I'll go with a more upscale casual recommendation: Dark denim jeans with a "boob" shirt-(if this is an attribute she can accentuate-does not have to have cleavage but must be snug) with a cropped jacket. Possibly leather or a cropped blazer. I'm with the girls on the boots worn under the jeans (not tucked in-too trendy) and hoop earrings-a must! Lydia is spot on about the makeup, natural and lip gloss is essential.
I hope she has a great time!

I agree with Lydia. She should wear something she's comfortable and confident wearing. If she's not, it doesn't matter how nice she looks, it will be awkward and unattractive.

Simple black dress. Works for all occasions.

Whatever she wears, she needs to feel natural and confident in it. If she OWNS the outfit, she OWNS the date.

And for the record, I'll notice a woman's shoes, and boots can be hot (but nots Uggs unless there is 3 feet of snow on the ground), but at least 97% of the date they are out of sight. Cute earings (to draw the eyes to the face) vs. necklace (to draw the eyes cleavage-ward).

Otherwise, I'll do the smart thing and agree with Gwen and Candy.
