The Rankings are Out!

September 27, 2007

So, this made me giggle like a little school girl. Courtesy of Yahoo! sports, they have their weekly college rankings (link). I'm sure you see your favorite school in the upper tiers of the bracket (even you Big Blue Nation people). Feel free to scroll down to number 76 where you'll find my lowly Irish. Then please, scroll down further (as in numbers 77, 81, and 87). I like how a winless Notre Dame team is still ranked above the three local teams. I hope that the local talk radio idiots see this, too, so that they can shut up (Chris Clark, I'm looking at you). It causes me to giggle, still.

And while I'm publically fellating Yahoo! sports, let me just say that, if you can't watch a baseball game on the television, Yahoo!'s coverage online is pretty fantastic. I "watched" the last inning of the Cardinals defeating the Brewers last night (and thereby dropping the Cubs' "magic number" to 3). It was the only solace I've got since I'm pretty sure the SCrubs are trying to kill me with this season. Ugh.

By the way, I got over one of the final major hurdles last night in proofreading my book. I finished a 33-page chapter. Now I have a series of shorter ones leading up to the climax of the story. I'll try to get that done this weekend, though I can't promise much on Saturday since I will be throwing up with every Purdue touchdown (as usual).

Apparently my school got a football team this year. I didn't know we played football in Lexington!

Apparently, the people of Louisville didn't know it either!

#27 for my beloved Huskers. Could be worse.

Seeing ND at 77 and surrounded by the teams at that level is really weird. It just doesn't look right.

Probably because ND actually plays some quality opponents - between NC State, UNC, and Duke, none of them play anyone good. NCST plays in the ACC, and while the ACC isn't rancid, the list of good teams is probably pretty short (VT and BC?). UNC plays in the ACC, and sucks, so no worries there. If Duke played an actual good team, they would need a shoebox for their remains (no, Northwestern doesn't count - when their quarterback says they can compete with any good team before getting smeared 45-0 by OSU at then end of the 1st half, you know they must not have picked one of the smart students for the football team).

OSU is notorious for playing underpowered instate rivals - we play Youngstown State (D2/1A/whatever), Akron, and Kent State this year, for example. The only decent team they've played yet was Washington, and I don't know how good they are. On the other hand, the Big 11? usually has multiple decent teams, so OSU generally sees decent teams at some point in their schedule, rather than having to run the gauntlet from hell before retreating to the cupcake part of the schedule. It might benefit ND to play the military academies less and some decent teams from the Big East, Big 11, or the ACC more often, particularly if they could then not be required to play USC and Michigan to assure a decent schedule.

Hooooly shit. We're ranked eighth.
WTF?! Maybe I should start liking football.

One of the funny things about that is that Indiana did not renew their contract to play Kentucky because Indiana wanted to start playing tougher opponents, or something like that.

Oh, the deliciousness that is college football.

Huh? Indiana played Indiana State, Western Michigan, and Akron, and they play Ball State later in the year. I would be curious to know how Kentucky can possibly weaken that non-conference schedule - I don't think even playing Western Kentucky would weaken it much.

At the time that the series was ended (two years ago, maybe three), Kentucky wasn't exactly the Kentucky that we saw tonight.

Both teams have gotten remarkably better, Kentucky far moreso than IU.

I was pointing out that IU wanting to "strengthen their schedule" a couple of years ago should have kept Kentucky.

I wasn't trying to disparage you - I just figured that if IU thought Kentucky wasn't a sufficient test for them (which for most of recent history, they wouldn't have been), it would have been good to schedule some real out-of-conference games than the current list of cupcakes.

OSU's OOC schedule isn't exactly stellar either, which may hurt eventually if the Big Ten(+1) gets recycled in bowl games again.
