Geography Prowess

December 8, 2008

After failing to crack the top 50% of geekitude in the last test, I figured I'd flash some serous prowess when it comes to maps and geography:

117

I ran out of time just as I started cranking through Africa (starting with South Africa/Lesotho/Swaziland), and I didn't get through much of central Asia--especially when it came to a lot of the former Soviet states whose names were too long to make for an efficient list...try spelling Azerbaijan and Tajikistan quickly while moving on to the next country in your mental atlas. It isn't easy, even for a dashingly suave geography sophisticate like myself--especially when spelling is key (for instance, I had to enter the Netherlands thrice before I was able to get the auto-checker to accept it...here's a hint...drop the "the" at the front).

So, there. If you're bored this afternoon because your boss and his boss and his boss are all out of town and you really don't feel like doing anything (like a hydrogenation), time yourself with this little quiz. Or just go back to my old post and stare at the girl dressed as Phoenix/Marvel Girl. Either way, you'll thank me for it.

I got 116. My training in the "Countries of Africa" quiz on Sporcle came in handy!

I'll have to test my son. He's been into geog since he was 5. By the time he was 10, I could give him a 20 year period throughout time and he could tell you how the map had changed.

ok you got me there. Im not bored enough to spend 5 minutes on a quiz. Although I just spent 10 reading and commenting on your last two posts.

Apparently, I AM bored enough to do those.

I just went and looked up Sporcle, Lou. Thank you, oh thank you, for leading me off to that site.

As if my days weren't crammed full of enough work-avoidance. Well, I guess I could play those games after I set up the hydrogenation this morning, but, seriously, what fun is that?

Impressive, Zibbs. Mightily impressive. I see your little one is a cartophile, much like myself.

E, I'm honored that you'd waste your free time reading the tripe that I trot out onto the internets most days rather than methodically type names into an online quiz. I shall humbly bow down to your greatness.

Wait, Africa is a continent and not a country!?

Only 65; I disappoint myself.

@ Frank: Don't tell Keith Olberman; he'll get upset (again).

@ Will: Sometimes in order to alleviate the joys of grad school, I would look through atlases and such. That way I could be in the library, still look productive, but take a break from the whole "chemistry 24 hours a day" stuff.

Lou said...

You looked through atlases?
I used to look through the Aldrich catalogue and marvelled at the range of chemicals and glassware I would never get to use. That and the Sigma catalogue kept me going for years.

BTW, I can finish the "Periodic Table" quiz on Sporcle in 5 minutes.

Ugh, my geography is crap. I have no doubt any attempt by me would be a a massive FAIL.

PS - you're TAGGED! come check out my blog for details

I can't get the darn page to open. So I'll just say I can name 118.

I'll just say I could probably do e^ln40 and impress everyone but you.

Any game that accepts Trinidad and Tobago as separate countries yet does not recognize devolved government in Scotland is not worth my time...or it was until I discovered these facts.

um..Ya, so all I have to say is: I was absent that day.
