A quick chemistry lesson:

This little guy is a benzene.

This one is called a tetrahydropyran.

If you take a benzene and a tetrahydropyran and fuse them together, you get a chromane (pronounced "crow-man").

If you oxidize the chromane, you get a chromanone ("crow-man-own").

If you draw primitive art on the wall of a cave around it, it's a Cro Magnon.

Chemistry and archaeology jokes: two great tastes that taste great together!

This is still too smart for me.

Excellent. I like it. Now for a 10 part series on funny names you can make with substituted benzene (such as: paradox, metaphysics, etc...)

Well now I just feel really smart, not that I was dumbish before...

Stole stuff today thanks

This is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. I thought you were going one way and you hit me with something else. Thanks.

The only thing I understand is the cave drawing of the mammoth.

The rest is like chemistry to me or something.

he he he. This brought a smile to my face, even though I don't know what Hi represents on the periodic table of elements. And why does the tetrahydropyran sound like Pauly Shore?

Or is that just me?

Huh...I totally thought of "Cro Magnon" when I saw "chromanone". I'm either brilliant or know just that little about chemistry.

I can't decide if I leave your posts feeling dumber or smarter... I'm gonna go with smarter. Cause it sounds better.

I would say they were actually covalently bonded but I'm not sure what a covalent bond means anymore. Chemistry was way too many decades ago. But I'm pretty sure there is nothing primitive in either one of those drawings~!

Alright. Bend over for your wedgie.

Ah, chemical goodness mixed with art history rolled up in the chewy delicious shell of a masterful pun.

Is there anything you can't do?

@ Moooooog35: Sorry. I tried to talk slowly. And LOUDLY.

@ Chemgeek: I was debating whether I should do something like that. I'm still not sure. I guess it depends on how creative I get during my next quarterly meeting.

@ sexnfries: Well, I'm glad I could accommodate...in any way possible.

@ Joshua: I wasn't sure how obvious the joke was going to become. It amused me to no end yesterday during a meeting when someone was explaining what a chromanone was, and I took it to that next step.

@ Ed: Oh, thank God. I was worried you were going to call it "Greek". And we don't need any of those smelly, oily, olive-pluckers around here!

@ Elliot HI is hydroiodic acid. It's kind of like hydrochloric, but with an iodine instead of a chlorine. And without the strong dissociation constant. HI-Oh!

Yeah, the chromanone heterocyclic oxygen does sound like Pauly Shore.

@ kate: Or my jokes are just THAT transparent. Or you're just effing brilliant!

Let's go with the latter.

@ Carissa: Let's go with smarter, because smart is beautiful, and beautiful is awesome, and you're totally awesome.

@ Happy Hour: Every bond in that structure (even the implied carbon-hydrogen bonds) are covalent bonds...though the carbon oxygen double bond is polarizable. If it's in the upper right-hand corner of the periodic table, it's typically covalently bonded.

@ Steamy Kid: Oh, petewy.

@ Eric: Touch my tongue to the tip of my nose.

So glad I came here! I'm about to take a Gr. 12 Chem course (yes, I'm in my 40s), and now I know for sure I'll pass!! Thanks!

Oh look, it's the picture boook version of The Indefatigable MJenks.

This is probably the least amount of words, ever, in a post from you.

Yet...still you stumped more than half of your readers.

So smart. And punny. God that's hot!

Man, I'm glad I stopped by today. Chemistry/anthropology puns are hard to come by...

P.S. And this is way better than Vital Beavis. (Thanks, Scope!)

Amusing, but it brings back horrible memories of Chemistry class in high school. NOT my forte!

Nerd.

So your wife. Is she real or did you build it?

BeckEye said...

I was totally expecting you to make a diagram that looked like balls and a dick.

you're very tricky with your words and your drawings, sir. very tricky indeed. i've got my eye on you...

@ Mary: If there's a heterocycles identification section on the test, you're golden.

@ adrienzgirl: *fans self* Careful now. You're dealing with an internet perv. You don't want to get him started...

@ Leah: I know! I identified a need on the internet, and now it's been met. Now if I could just find a way to work in some amino acid jokes, I'd be golden.

And, I dunno...Vital Bevis is pretty effing awesome...

@ Erin: You covered organic compounds of any kind in your high school chem class? I'm impressed.

@ Tish: If I built her, I'd get head more often.

@ Beckeye: Jeez, Beckeye...wait, I'm totally working on that next.

@ mylittlebecky: Careful. I'm like the sun. Prolongued exposure results in blindness AND cancer.

This is chemistry.

This is my brain on chemistry.
