So, it was 80 degrees here this weekend. Sunny. Beautiful. Not a cloud in the sky. All you could ever ask for in a weekend and more.
And I was sick.
Not only that, but I didn't go see Watchmen because I was sick. I knew this would happen, too. My kids and my wife all had this cold, so I figured I'd get it the weekend that Watchmen came out. And I did. Power of positive thinking, huh? Couple in the time change with Daylight Saving Time and I was out of it for most of Sunday. I mean, I laid on the couch, bleary-eyed, for most of the morning and then sort of putz around the house in the afternoon. On Saturday, the coach for my daughter's basketball team had a cookout for the girls and their families, so we went to that. In that manner, the weekend wasn't a total bust. Being that this was the first nice weekend, I naturally forgot sunscreen, and so my two kids were kind of pink-faced when we came home Saturday evening.
Did any of you not named Scope go see Watchmen this weekend? I did get to finish my re-read of the book, so I might go during the week some time. I heard from a fan that it was awesome, and then on the radio this morning I heard some nub who called in and said, "We went with our entire family, and we were thinking it would be something like Spider-Man, but it wasn't. It was all dark and depressing and there was a lot of talking."
Are you that dumb? Did you not at least look into the movie before you went? Isn't everything revolving around the movie's release hinged on the words "Alan Moore's dark take on costumed superheroes"? And, of course, everyone was talking about Dr. Manhattan's blue dick. The rest of him is blue, so did they think his man parts would be any different? I mean, I realize what Laurie's role was when she lived with him, but I didn't expect her to be that good at it.
Also, this weekend, I realized that I totally missed doing my basketball prediction post. I even had things all written down on a scrap piece of paper with analysis and predictions and everything, but then I got distracted last week and didn't get it done. I can tell you that I successfully picked Cornell, Morehead St. and Radford, but the last two were just sentimental guesses.
Just remember, at Morehead State, the cheerleaders yell out what you want from them.
Update! No sooner had I pushed "publish" than the phone rang, and my wife was informing me that the school called informing her that Cookie was, well, tossing her cookies and had that fresh, warm feeling of just coming out of the oven (in other words, a fever). I rushed out the door to go get her only to discover that they wanted me to take Tank home, too, because he knocked his nose on another kid's forehead in the bathroom. He was bloody or had anything broken, but he was "inconsolable" over the affair, so I whisked them both home where they are recovering nicely. As my boss said as I was running out the door earlier, "March is shaping up to be one helluva month for you, huh?"
Yep.

I didn't go see it, but we're getting free tickets!!! The husband got them with some video game thing or other.
I really hate people who don't check out movies before taking kids to them - hello, it's called responsible parenting? - and then have the gall to complain afterwards!
PS - Is that Simpsons pic from a recent ep? Hilario.
Blue man parts, huh? Awww, poor fella.
Watchmen...didn't see it. But I am intrigued by Dr. Manhattan's blue dick. Does this mean he has perpetual blue balls??
No wonder it's a dark tale.
Just like some people (my parents) think that anything animated is by definition only for kids, some people will think that anything with a superhero in a costume is for kids, too. Even a cursory search for information about Watchmen would show that it's not really a family movie.
Parenting FAIL
If there's one thing I hate in movies, it's talking. The last thing I want to do in the theatre is, like, think and stuff. Give me something with Bruce Willis - a lot of explosions and a lot of incoherent yelling.
I just drank this weekend. And had Travolta's favorite pizza.
I've never read the Watchmen books (or book, singular?) so I have no expectations of the movie. I will probably wait until it comes out on Netflix.
I did review it, and I do sort of like it... Probably will see it again if I have the time... *sigh* No doubt you'll end up in a theater where some of the people haven't read the comic and will be giggling and laughing at it... *sigh* at least I was...
Oh, just to make you laugh, What if Watchmen were a Saturday morning cartoon? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDDHHrt6l4w
You already blue dick commented on my review, so I blue dick won't blue dick rehash it. blue dick blue dick.
Too much blue dick?
Yeah. That's what I thought.
However, I WILL say that here in New Hampshire it was 60 degrees and we were out all weekend in just shirts.
Today?
5 fucking inches of snow.
Sometimes I cry.
I didn't get to see it yet either. :-(
Hope you and the kids are all feeling better soon!
Ugh! Feel better ASAP, okay?
Do you think that it would make things that much more dramatic when I come to the door for the Jehovah's Witnesses with no pants on...if I had a blue dick? Something to look into, I'm thinking.
Wow... sounds like you guys are having a crazy time already. Hope you all get better soon.
"..It was all dark and depressing and there was a lot of talking."
That's effing hilarious. Why doesn't he just say: "I just wanted pretty pictures and good animation with a sweet message about mankind at the end. I really didn't want to listen and actually have to think."
I saw it yesterday. My review is forthcoming....
Yuck. Get better.
mmm, tossin cookies, bloody noses, and wonderful weather outside you're missing-
You sure you didn't move in Murphy this week?
Well, drat. Sorry to hear your weekend was spoiled by illness and that the end isn't yet in sight.
I was going to go but ended up spending the afternoon visiting with my mom. At this point I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD. 'Sides, I want to read the book first.
Feel better, friend.
Watchmen do what?
Never heard of it. I am impervious to hype.
Well, it was not that warm here, but it was better than it has been this weekend...and I am nursing a sprained ankle. So, I feel you.
As for films, I have not darkened the door of a movie theater since 1992 and I don't plan to change this anytime soon.
Here is the part where Lisa-tastrophie gets to be a smart ass and say "I told you so" (see comment on previous post). Yep, it never fails. If I'm sick all weekend, the weather is BEAUTIFUL!! Then I get better at 6 a.m. on Monday and the week is rainy and crappy. Weather karma sucks just as much as regular karma.
Sorry about the Watchmen. I'm with Candy on the blue ball question. Inquiring minds want to know. :-)
No Watchmen here... and hey, March is almost half way over... you definately need a fast forward button.
@ Soda and Candy: The Simpsons pic is from an episode from last season or the year before. Alan Moore actually lent his voice for the episode, which surprised me, since, you know, Hollywood is the Devil and all.
@ Cora: Yep. Blue man parts. But then, he also has blue shoulders.
@ Candy: Yes, he does have perpetual blue balls. Despite Silk Spectre's best intentions.
@ Words^3: My parents are in the same class of people, except my mom does enjoy a good cartoon. And, yeah, I guess maybe the R rating on the movie didn't clue people in that it was going to be a little less happy than Spider-Man.
@ Frank: Even Bruce Willis' movies are toned down now to allow the teenbeat crowd in. Case in point, Die Hard 4.
@ Beckeye: Yeah, if you haven't read the book(s), then it might confuse the hell out of you. Netflix might be the way to go.
@ Jidai: I figured that something like that would happen from the reaction I heard about Dr. Manhattan's peezer. I'm going tonight, so hopefully there will be less nubs in the crowd and more people who actually want to see it.
@ moooooog35: The best part about warm weather followed by a blast of cold is women who didn't check the forecast ahead of time and stumble out wearing something inappropriate: their headlights run even during the day.
@ Giggle Pixie: Thanks. I'm better today, and both the kids seem fine. So, hooray!
@ SassyBritches: Yes, I think it would be far more amazing if you showed up at the door with no pants AND had a blue dick. In fact, I'm pretty either/or in this case would apply, as well.
@ Kimizzy: Precisely. You know, it's okay to leave a movie feeling depressed. Hell, if any of my books ever get published and turned into movies, that's how viewers are supposed to leave.
@ Jon: Good to see you're still around. And, dug the review.
@ Mary Moore: I'm feeling much better, thank you.
@ Shupe: Well...I was pretty out of it on Sunday...who knows?
@ Gwen: I think that's a good plan. I mean, yeah, I'd like to see the movie make more money in the box office to shut up critics who think that's the determining factor for a film's worth and merit, but I also think this is a story you should have at least some idea about prior to viewing it.
@ TishTash: Watch men kick ass, that's what.
@ Will: Another late-night run to Taco Bell do you in?
@ Lisa: Yeah, karma sucks. And, yeah, he has blue balls all the time. He should live in Pennsylvania (I hope someone other than me gets that).
@ Susan: True, true. Things seem to be quieting down a touch now, so hopefully the rest of March will just be a joy ride.
